Volkswagen Group IT comprises more than 9,300 IT employees, 700 running systems and over two millions daily users around the globe: 570,000 employees in the Volkswagen Group, 324,000 users in the dealerships and the employees of our 40,000 suppliers, not to mention the millions of Volkswagen customers who access our systems on a daily basis.
As Group IT, we develop and run innovative technologies for all of the brands, companies and departments worldwide. We implement their requirements in a quick, competent and solution-oriented manner.
The main responsibilities of Volkswagen Group IT are the development and further development of our applications and management of IT operations throughout entire Group.
Currently running over 1,500 IT projects, we provide support for departments from the entire Group at each stage in the automotive production chain. Whether our employees are at Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Ducati, Lamborghini, MAN, Porsche, Scania, Seat, Skoda, Volkswagen or Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, they do not only programme the systems, they also provide process support to colleagues from Technical Development, Production and Sales. This enables us to develop applications which are tailor made precisely to suit our users' needs. The “digital factory†allows Volkswagen planners to walk through future factory halls long before the first foundations are laid. The Group-wide production, information and management system, “FIS†is our solution for ensuring that colleagues on the production line can build the right vehicle at the right time. In addition to the well-known car configurators, we are also developing the unique Web 2.0 experience apps for the Sales division. We also cater for the short-term mobility needs of customers. Working together with Volkswagen Financial Services AG, we set up the car sharing project, “Quicar share a Volkswagen†in 2011. With 200 Golf Blue Motion vehicles parked at 50 stations in Hannover, Quicar customers have access to vehicles 7 days a week.
And of course, IT is an indispensable component of any car nowadays. The term „connected car“ covers all safety, information and entertainment electronics systems found in the car. In particular, it refers to the network of individual systems and how they are connected to each other and to external systems such as manufacturer servers, other vehicles, PCs, mobile telephones and the internet.
IT operations responsibilities include providing, maintaining and further developing the infrastructure needed for our systems. This also involves monitoring and managing ten international data processing centres, system support and provision of software for our users and implementing new technologies from the area of smart phones, tablet PCs and telepresence. The sun never sets for Volkswagen so our IT control centre, data processing centres and help desk employees are there for employees around the clock, whether our assistance is needed in China or Argentina.
IT in the Volkswagen Group is a top team with a vision. We see ourselves as a service provider for the entire Volkswagen Group. Every day is an exciting challenges for us thanks to the rapid global growth of the Group and the dramatic dynamics of the IT market.
